You’ve done your research. You’ve looked at price points. You know what glass manufacturer you want to handle your glass flooring project. Before you sign on the dotted line, though, make sure to ask them about their anti-slip glass flooring testing policies. To ensure you’re getting the safest flooring possible, here’s what to consider.
When a manufacturer says their glass flooring is slip resistant and safe, this isn’t a time to take their word for it. Make sure they’re using best-in-class anti-slip testing methods.
When it comes to glass flooring, the most important thing is safety.
It’s a stunning product. It makes a bold design statement. It offers lots of functional and aesthetic benefits.
But improper design, manufacturing, or installation can lead to safety issues. If there are problems with your flooring, that can open you up to personal financial liability.
You always want to ensure your glass manufacturer puts all glass flooring under thorough, valid, extensive testing.
Ideally, a glass manufacturer won’t be doing their own slip-resistance testing. Because they are incentivized to find their products safe, those test results become less than reliable.
Prioritize working with manufacturers who can provide evidence of a neutral, credible third-party tester.
Not all anti-slip testing for glass flooring is created equal. Some tests are more useful and valid than others.
For example, tests to determine the static coefficient of friction have limited validity. They can be reliable for dry conditions, but they do not account for or reliably predict slip resistance in wet conditions.
If your glass flooring could potentially get exposed to water or other liquid, you want tests that account for the dynamic coefficient of friction.
The British pendulum test equipment is largely considered the gold standard in slip-resistance testing. Many of the most trusted and reliable testing standards use this equipment.
Additionally, don’t settle for manufacturers who provide the results alone from a test. Without the proper context, those numbers are essentially meaningless.
When you see results, ensure those numbers are given with three things:
